I did the Acent 2 years ago. I am from GA. I trained on Stone Mountain, but NOTHING in GA compares to Pikes. I arrived 2 days in advance. I heard others say that year it took 30 days to get used to altitude. So....I took it easy on Friday before....at fruit and drank powerade all day and stayed off my feet. I met someone from NEW MEX that day who said to take it easy at the start on SAT morning..."dont go out hard...and you will pass the speeders later on." He was exactly right...This race is better than any Marathon I have ever done. You will love it!

I'm a first-time Ascenter from the lowlands of the Midwest. I had planned to arrive a week before the race and stay with my niece and nephew in the Crested Butte area (around 8,900 feet) in order to acclimate a little. I have since read a piece suggesting that one should either arrive at least 2 weeks before or the day before, that there is a middle area that is worse than even arriving the day before. Anyone have an opinion whether arriving one day before or one week before is better?
