My goal in yesterday's Pikes Peak Marathon was to simply finish. I was not concerned with the time...I knew it was not going to be a PR year. So I put my "Run Happy" shirt on and did my best to follow the advice. I'd say I accomplished that most of the time but I know there were a few times that I probably had a "run...what the heck was I thinking signing up for this race?!". ;)
It might be my slowest PPM to date, but I accomplished my goal and that's all that matters to me! :) I love the PPA and PPM because of the challenge, the awesome beauty of the mountain and most importantly because of the people. Every Aid Station contained volunteers ready to assist us with food, water or Gatorade, many smiles and cheers of support. They were fabulous and kept me motivated! I'm sure if the Cirque Aid Station had truly been serving the "Margaritas" that they offered on my way down, I'd have been motivated to stop right there! Living here in the Springs and knowing some of the people who were volunteering was a nice bonus...it's always nice to see a familiar face on the course and even better to get a hug at the turn-around (thanks Micky!). :)
And the runners. What can I say? Runners rock!! I can't count how many times runners on their way down the mountain gave positive words of encouragement to me as I continued on my way up to the summit. How awesome is that!?
Come and run the Peak again next year and if you can't run, then please consider volunteering! You'll have lots of fun helping out AND you won't be sore after the race is over. ;) Happy training everyone!
