i agree about the finish line food. when i finished the marathon in a little over 8 hours, there was no food anywhere in sight. No One directed to me to any food.. all i was offered was the same salty snacks i was munching on for the last 8 hours. Every race has a good mix of carbs/protein food at the finish of any race.. including some local 5k's. It's beneficial to the recovery process and for a race of this magnitude, calling itself America's Ultimate Challenge, the 2nd hardest in the world... etc, to not have big time, or even good sponsors supplying ADEQUATE finish line food is sad. Especially considering this race has had 58 years to build those relationships.
The "excuse" for not having gels on the course was because of the tabs that get torn off and thrown along the course. Well i'd like to think that this race draws a better group of runners that have more respect for their environment than that. But if runners still insist on tossing that tab on the ground, CLIF SHOTS has come up with the solution to it. Google it...the tab is attached to the package and would be perfect! (I carried 14 gels...used one every 30 minutes)
Other than that this was a great race and well run!! Especially considering what Manitou went through that week. The gels isn't a big deal.. but finish line food,, and KNOWING where to get it is especially important! Thanks
