Race director for the Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon was/is lobbying to have the Incline closed 15 Aug, the Friday before the races as a matter of safety. As much as I love the Incline, I agree. Every year there are hikers on Barr Trail despite notification of the races, and every year there are alterations with runners--not saying who's at fault. But having the last two days the Incline will be open the same time as two very tough races with very fast and tired runners coming down the same stretch of Barr Trail most Incliners use is asking for problems (IMO). Project Manager said the date will remain 18 Aug, final decision resides with Colorado Springs Parks and Recs. The Incline is going to close... a couple days earlier in the interest of safety is a smart move. Search and Rescue have enough to deal with during these tough races--possibly having them reassign folks to the bottom three miles to deal with this added potential problem could take them away from more difficult to reach places higher up. Everyone has one, voice your opinion--from either side so decision makers can know the pulse of the Incliners and racers. Thank you Ann for raising this issue. To be fair, I'll repost to the Pikes Peak Marathon site page as well. See ya on the hill.
