$3.50 a pop? ouch. I usually get mine for about $1 ea (there are a few "special" ones out there that go for $2.50+ but I cant figure out what the diff is in practical terms). Some stores offer volume discounts if you get X of them at once (and they dont have to all be the same flavor) As for which ones, I went to the local REI since they had a good selection at the time and bought one of everything that didnt sound too nasty. I then tried them during my training runs till I found a few that I liked. Some brands cause my stomach to turn over, others just taste too sweet, and then some are just right. Once you find the just right ones get a box of them. Now, to simulate altitude, simply pop one with about 15 minutes left of a long training run, drink some water then crank up the intensity a notch for 10 minutes and see what happens :-) For a 5 hour ascent you are going to want to have about 4 to 5 of them with you. Pop one about every hour.
