You can use the pace calculator at http://www.skyrunner.com/pace.htm to figure out what your splits need to be. Then the only thing you need to do is figure out how to hit those splits with the lowest energy expenditure possible. Easy eh? :) For some areas that means running rather than walking, for others that means walking faster and for two (NN -> 7.8 -> Barr camp) that means running faster. Using the pace calculator, you can convert the section's split to a mph or min/mile to figure out if you can walk or run it. i.e., a 3:00 pace through the W's (1.8 miles) is 24:50. This is 4.5mph. Most folks cant really walk above 4mph so this is a section you will need to run for 3:00 time. The 2 -> 1 markers is a 15:18 split for 3:00. This section is really 0.9 miles so a 17 min mile, thus a section you can walk (3.5mph) All of that said, its not a simple "I'd walk this section and run that section" type of thing. The grades change from switchback to switchback. It also really helps to know what is at the end of that next switchback to know what you can get away with. Thus you may find that for the 2 -> 1 markers you run the middle section and walk the switchbacks at the end.
