I was thinking about running the Pikes Peak Road Runners Winter Series of Races (pprrun.org). The first race is in Cheyenne Mountain State Park on Jan 12th. PPRR website has a detailed map of most of its races and the trail in CMSP is clearly visible on the Google Map satellite view. I traced the 5k route and ran it on the treadmill. It was a great simulation. I selected the satellite view (no street view available) and watched the Google teardrop progress along the trail while the incline on the treadmill adjusted from +8% to -6% in 2% increments. It was even fun to run on a treadmill (did I really say that?). If you wanted to run a race like the "5k on St. Patrick's day" which is all on streets in downtown Colorado Springs, the street view should be available for the whole race. The street view is not a movie, but rather a series of still frames that change as you progress along the route. You are only limited by areas supported by Google Maps which is worldwide, so if you want to run on the streets of the major cities or tourist sites, you can do that. If you have a Garmin GPS watch, you can sync that device to the ifit.com website and upload the route you recorded on your Garmin and run that route on the treadmill. NordicTrack recently announced that you can do the same thing with the IPhone
