The heat affected me as well, and I am used to it as I come from South Florida. I run with EFS which is a carb and high electrolyte beverage. I set a timer to drink often but I started cramping in my quad and foot after 3 hrs and could not work it out. I got cleared to go ahead at the A frame aide station but did not make it to the A frame chip timer in time so had to go back down. After Barr Camp on the way up I had to keep stopping to try to stretch out my quad so I knew I would not be able to make it to the top anyways in that condition. If I attempt to do this again, I'll have to do something to address the cramping in addition to my beverage. I did not bring enduralites because I thought my drink would be enough, but I learned that lesson the hard way. I did eat salty snacks on the way but that wasn't enough either. It was funny how everything, including my hammer gels, stuck to the roof of my mouth. That was a new experience.
Despite this...I'm really proud of how far I got on my first attempt. The volunteers were awesome and so friendly. I'm amazed at how the city got cleaned up so fast. We're a little used to damage from hurricanes, and we never get cleaned up that fast. Congrats to everyone.
