I ran my first Ascent 2 years ago in road shoes, Asics Tri-Noosas to be exact. No problems at all. Last year I did the marathon in Brooks Pure Grits. It was awful. My feet were absolutely killing me. Not nearly enough cushioning. This year, I have Hoka Bondi 3s. I was in Manitou in early May and did a few miles on Barr Trail. The Hokas were amazing. You can fly downhill in surprising comfort. I'd highly recommend.
