If you live in Colorado (especially the Pikes Peak region) it’s hard to call yourself a runner without doing the Peak. And once you’ve done it, I can’t imagine not continuing to do it for every year that your legs can hold you up. Finishing the ascent at the top of a mountain is a unique experience, and as much as I like the Mt Evans ascent, the atmosphere on Pikes Peak so much more electric, historical and meaningful. Finishing the marathon in Manitou is different, though just as exhilarating – an entire town wraps itself up in these two races for the whole weekend. There’s also something deeper and more majestic than any other race when you stand at the start line and listen to the national anthem, while looking up at the peak that inspired it. I would be curious to see a comparison of repeat racers on Pikes Peak as compared to other races. I would guess that despite the cost, required training, and long distance travel for many, this is one of the most highly returned to races.
