How Much Does the Ascent Take Out of You?

I'm doing the double for the first time and just wondering whether since the ascent is more like a glorified hike (as mine was last year) and therefore not that tiring, will it not affect my marathon that much? I know that normally running uphill is much easier on the body than downhill, so I would think the same would apply here, just curious. I didn't have much trouble with the altitude last year but am also wondering whether getting there 2 days before the marathon instead of the day before will make a difference in ability to handle the altitude. Probably no way to know until I do it and no reason to worry, because I can't change my arrival time, but it's on my mind anyway. I would love to hear about previous doublers' experiences and how tired they were on marathon day.
