I am a slow runner and for me the most important thing is to check the weather before I go and plan accordingly. If it is predicted to be a nice day, I may go with only a tech T-shirt. I will always carry a water bottle and salt tablets and nourishment in the back of my RaceReady shorts. When I saw the weather report for race day in 2009, I got out my backpack and put in waterproof pants and jacket and some synthetic underwear that I wear when I go skiing along plus waterproof gloves and a ski cap. Even if the weather is good, there is always a chance for an afternoon thunderstorm (typical in the mountains), usually after 11:00pm. If you get caught in one of these (especially above timberline), the sun will go away, the wind will pick up and you will be soaked and regret that you only dressed in shorts and a T-shirt. No matter what, I always fill my sweat check bag (available at the PPA finish line) with a set of warm dry clothes if things do not turn out as planed.
