I would not arrive 1 week before race. I think you are better off if you arrive 1 day early. the idea is you will run/walk the race before your body knows what is going on. Many people who go out 1 week early get sick on their 4-6 day they are at high altitude. I live in Wichita KS. and have done ascent the past two years. I go out on Friday and race Sat. Works for me. I also suggest taking 1 asprin every 1 hour on the trail. This has worked for me. I am a 3 hr. 55 min. marathon runner and did the ascent in 4 hr. 9 min. last year. I am 43 years old. Good luck and you will love this race. In response to: I'm a first-time Ascenter from the lowlands of the Midwest. I had planned to arrive a week before the race and stay with my niece and nephew in the Crested Butte area (around 8,900 feet) in order to acclimate a little. I have since read a piece suggesting that one should either arrive at least 2 weeks before or the day before, that there is a middle area that is worse than even arriving the day before. Anyone have an opinion whether arriving one day before or one week before is better?
