Posting a Follow-Up to
not making the cut-off (additional thoughts)

Mandy, I did my first PPM last year. At 66, my normal time varies from 3:50 to 4:30, depending on conditions. I had never run a real trail marathon and had done only one previous marathon at some altitude (Park City, UT). I arrived on Mon and ran/walked down the trail after taking the tram to the top. Much more dangerous going down than up. The ascent was not too bad actually. I took a few TUMS about 30 min before the start and, after reaching above the treeline, I took a few more since I could feel a headache coming on. The headache stopped right away. I walked down mostly since I did not want to trip on a root or a rock. My time was just over 9 hours, which, though disappointing, reflected my lack of expertise in trail running downhill. It is a real art form, especially the way the elites do it. For me, seeing them leaping downhill while we ascended was worth the price of admission. But going up is not that bad - as long as you're in good shape. I saw only one overweight runner when I was coming down. I doubt if he made the cutoff. Good luck!
