Some Info on Why the Flash Floods in Manitou
8/13/2013 7:37:17 PM
For the out of towners who may wonder why Manitou is having flash floods. Last summer the Waldo Canyon Fire destroyed most of the trees and vegetation on the mountains north of Manitou Springs and north of Hwy 24 between Manitou Springs and beyond Cascade toward Woodland Park. The lack of vegetation no longer holds the water and serious flash floods have occurred in Manitou Springs; the most serious was last Friday. Just north of Manitou is Williams Canyon that funnels all its water into Manitou Springs until it joins Fountain Creek. The below link shows a flash flood along Canon Avenue (I believe). https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10200193708468024&set=vb.1311230555&type=2&theater The weather looks good for Friday and Saturday (as of the time of this post), but the rains likely return on Sunday. You may not want to park along or near Canon Avenue for the PPM. The link is from Facebook. I am not sure it will play for non Facebook users. For the runners who usually take an "ice" bath in fountain creek, be a bit careful this year.
