Note that the big change is to the folks using the GoG race as the qualifier. It's use is very restricted and must be from that year so the times are just 2 months old. The other qualifiers (13.1, 26.2, PPA/PPM) can currently go back a few years. I do think some of it may be the "I'm way under the cutoff, I'll be fine" mentality. In reality if you are in this time range and not focused on training you will be in a world of hurt and most likely not finish. John V, KHW, etc know what it takes and don't assume that they will be fine. For kicks, here are the Vdot requirements for each of the proposed qualifiers (Vdot is loosely based on V02max). Half Marathon: 29.04 Full Marathon: 25.39 Garden 10M: 25.82 (does not take into account the hills, so add 2-3 to this.) So if you are at the back of the pack, "old," or "slow," the "easiest" route in is to run a full marathon. The hardest route is to try and run a half. I think what trips most folks up is that being able to run for 2 hours does not prep you for being able to go 6. This is probably why runners who use a full marathon as their qualifier rarely have issues. Those who use significantly shorter races (13.1 and GoG) do.
