Posting a Follow-Up to
Indicator for PPA

Hey Andrew, I took a look at your qual times and your Vail half and compared it with some other runners I know to run both races. You should be able to meet the cutoffs without much difficulty if you run a smart race. You probably fit in the mid to later half of wave 2 for the Ascent. If you are worried about making the cutoff times I would recommend two things. 1. Make yourself a pace card based on a 5:30 finish time. See my other posts below. That will get you to Barr Camp in 2:48; 12 minutes ahead of the 3:00 cutoff time. You will have 9 points along the course to validate your progress before Barr Camp. It will provide crucial info on whether you are ahead or behind schedule. It will also provide two checkpoints between Barr Camp and A-Frame/3 to go. 2. Don't start off too fast. I walked the whole course (including the streets of Manitou) and finished in 5:45 last year. When the race starts, let at least half of the runners go ahead of you. See my remarks on "Passing on the Trail" below. If you live in COS area, you can actually do the Ascent (all 13.32 miles) before the race. I did that today (22 July). I parked on Colorado Avenue near the start line (free parking, but beyond the start line it is not free parking). I had intended to ride the COG train down, but all seats were full. I was able to quickly get a ride down. Most people who drive to the top of Pikes Peak are fascinated by people who hike the trail. Hope this helps. Best of luck in your endeavor. In response to: This is my first year doing the PPA. I just ran the Vail half marathon this last weekend. I'm concerned that I might miss the PPA cutoff. I was able to run 4 miles in about an hour and got to the peak (11,200, 8.8 miles) in just over 2 hours (very slow compared to the field). Should I be worried? My number one goal is to make the cutoff.
