8 a.m. Friday, August 9th, 1957 — 15 runners started the race.

Five days before this race 88 year-old Inestine B. Roberts left for her 14th climb of Pikes Peak. Monte Woldford saw her the next afternoon while on a training run and that was the last anyone saw of her until her body was found on August 14th. There is now a memorial just above the tree-line for her.

Jon Jecker, a smoker, almost pulled off the win after changing the lead several times with Monte. It was rumored that there was a $20,000 award from the American Tobacco Association to a smoker who won. There are some that think Jecker may have just been “playing” the part to try and get the award.

At any rate, because of the push Monte lowered his marathon record by 24m5s. The finish was a classic brag-a-thon with Monte boasting, “I am not tired or panting.” Jecker shot back, “Take notice that I a am smoker,” and lit one up just to drive home the point. Not to be outdone, Dr. Suominen a one-time wrestler, asked after his finish, “Who wants to wrestle?” Nothing seemed to be made of the fact that he was beaten by a smoker.

Note: The race started and ended by the COG depot so it was 1.1 miles shorter
than the current Pikes Peak Ascent and 1.85 miles shorter than the current Pikes
Peak Marathon which starts at the Manitou Springs courthouse and ends at Ruxton and
Manitou Ave. This change took place in 1976. The adjustment times are for comparisons
only and were made by adding 6.3% to the ascent time and 6% to the descent time.
