Although women had been allowed to compete since the first race in 1956 this would be the first year where a women finished the marathon. In 1958 Arlene stopped at the top and was therefore DQed. In this race women could stop at the top or run the marathon and Arlene did just that thus becoming the first women to officially finish a marathon in the United States! However it was her 9 year-old daughter who arrived at the summit just over 20 minutes later that had everyone talking.

Also of interest was the race of Min the horse. It had the fastest time to the top (although it arrived in 4th place because it started 30 minutes late) but due to a bruise on its leg had to be walked down. In late 1961 she was stuck and killed by lightning.

Calvin Hansen in his 2nd win finally put away the 23 year-old ascent record that Lou Wille set back in 1936. Speaking of Wille, many took notice (mostly thanks to his own boasting) that he had beaten Dr. Suominen in their rematch to which the doctor replied, “Just think how good he could be if he didn’t smoke.”

Notes: The race started and ended by the COG depot so it was 1.1 miles shorter
than the current Pikes Peak Ascent and 1.85 miles shorter than the current Pikes
Peak Marathon which starts at the Manitou Springs courthouse and ends at Ruxton and
Manitou Ave. This change took place in 1976. The adjustment times are for comparisons
only and were made by adding 6.3% to the ascent time and 6% to the descent time.

Arlene’s ascent time varies depending on the source.
